Transit Safety Dispatch:

Call us if you witness or are involved in an incident on our property. We’re here to help, any way we can, with distress, vandalism, need of medical attention, disputes, suspicious packages, unsafe or prohibited activity—things we should all be aware of. Call us any time. Call 911 for life threatening emergencies or crimes in progress.

We take your safety seriously, and that’s a promise because we know there’s a lot riding on us. In fact, safety is so important to us that we’re one of the safest transit systems around. We work closely with our community, local law enforcement and emergency response services to ensure we have the highest safety practices and standards anywhere.

Personal Safety Tips

Train Safety Tips:

  • The Yellow Line — Staying behind that yellow line puts you at a safe distance from oncoming or departing trains. That’s why it’s there. Mind the Yellow Line and always be aware of your surroundings.
  • Waiting on the Platform — Always spread out along the platform to avoid overcrowding of one area. Carry all personal articles such as backpacks and computer bags in your hands. If a train is moving, standstill and wait for it to come to a stop.
  • Crossing Train Tracks — Crossing tracks illegally can result in serious, even fatal, injury. On platforms, never cross train tracks anywhere at any time. At railway crossings, use the designated crossings; they’re designed to keep you safe. And never rush to cross ahead of a train – that’s just outright dangerous.
  • Mind the Gap — Be careful of any gaps between the platform and the train while you get on and off.
  • In case of an emergency, every train is equipped with emergency exits, first aid kits, MIKEY defibrillators and emergency equipment. Also, our Customer Service Ambassador (CSA) on board every train is trained to provide assistance during an emergency. Remember, the best commute is a safe one.

Bus Safety Tips:

  • Don’t Chase the Bus — Chasing after the bus can lead to accidents and injuries. Just wait for the next one, it’ll arrive shortly.
  • Mobile Devices — Talking and texting can lead to accidents. Don’t be distracted and pay attention to your surroundings.
  • Request Stop — When travelling after dusk, you may request to exit the bus anywhere along the route, as long as the driver can stop the bus safely. We ask that you let your driver know in advance where you’d like to get off.
  • In the event of an emergency, our buses are equipped with emergency equipment including evacuation windows, hatches, first aid kits and fire extinguishers. It’s important to follow the instruction of GO personnel, police, fire, and emergency response teams during any emergency or evacuation.

Station Safety Tips:

  • Be Careful. Rushing down stairs can lead to serious injury. Be aware of your surroundings and give yourself extra time in bad weather conditions.
  • In case of an emergency at a GO facility, GO personnel will initiate emergency evacuation procedures for the affected site and will provide instructions on safe exit locations through our public address system. GO staff, police, fire or ambulance crews will determine the best evacuation method for passengers with mobility aids.

Bike Safety Tips:

Lock it up — Remember always to lock your bike when parking at a GO facility, and register it with the city in which you’re parking it in.

GO Transit Safety Officer Tips:

GO’s Transit Safety Officers are primarily responsible for ensuring your personal safety.

They are also responsible for friendly customer assistance, fare inspections, regular prevention and deterrence patrols, support for local police, fire and ambulance, parking, by-law, provincial law and Criminal Code enforcement, locate missing persons and protect vulnerable passengers and promote railway safety.

Our Transit Safety Officers are clearly identifiable by their uniform. Every uniform includes a hat and shirt displaying the Transit Safety shield, a black vest with “Transit Safety” printed across the front, black pants with a gray stripe, and a duty belt.

Officers are authorized to enforce GO Transit By-laws, which govern passenger conduct, fare inspection and use of our facilities. Officers are also authorized to enforce the following statutes: The Criminal Code, Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, Youth Criminal Justice Act, Trespass to Property Act, Liquor License Act, Sections 17, 28, 33 of the Mental Health Act and Safe Streets Act. To ensure the highest standards of professionalism and accountability, Transit Safety Officers are designated as “Special Constables” through a sponsorship program with the Ontario Provincial Police and the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services. Education is the key to injury prevention and keeping everyone safe around railways. GO’s Transit Safety Officers continually reach out to various communities addressing local issues promoting railway safety through events and presentations.

Auto Theft & Damage

Our stations, parking lots and structures are primarily patrolled by our Transit Safety Officers. In addition, our front line staff—such as station sales, bus drivers, and maintenance & construction people— all provide a helping hand in looking for suspicious or unusual activity. Transit Safety works closely with local police in addressing incidents of property crime and overall customer safety. With all these security measures—including our comprehensive CCTV system—cars parked on our property are still subject to theft, vandalism and property damage experienced by cars in similar public parking spaces like shopping malls, plazas and supermarket lots.

When parking your vehicle:

  • Close all the windows and lock all vehicle doors
  • Use your anti-theft devices, such as a car alarm or steering wheel lock, if you have one
  • Keep your valuables from sight – that includes loose change, GPS devices, phones, etc.

In the unfortunate event that you’ve experienced property damage or auto crime on our property, you should:

  • Make sure you’re safe or get to a safe place—safety comes first
  • Take notes/pictures of the damage incurred
  • Take notes/pictures of the parking space where damage occurred
  • Drive home if your car can operate safely; otherwise, call a friend, family member or taxi to take you home
  • From home, call the non-emergency number of your local police to file a report
  • Call your car insurance company to report the incident
  • Call GO Transit Safety Dispatch at 1-877-297-0642 to report the incident

After you’ve called GO Transit Safety and filed an incident report, a Transit Safety Officer assigned to your case will call back to gather additional information if required. Transit Safety will assist the local police with their investigation to review the facts and evidence gathering that may include police CCTV review. CCTV images will be shared only with the police as part of their investigation.

Please keep the police and GO Transit informed when incidents such as vandalism and theft occur; this allows us to collaborate with local police and coordinate our resources more effectively.

Safe Driving

Parking at a GO Station

  • Drive within the speed limit in parking lots.
  • Respect your fellow passengers; practice courteous and safe parking
  • Please park in designated spaces only. We ask that you do your part to avoid blocking in other vehicles, emergency exits and accessible spaces. This could result in your vehicle being ticketed and/or towed.
  • Better yet, try alternative ways of getting to your station, such as walking, biking, using local transit or carpooling.

Driving over Railway Crossing

  • Use caution when driving over train tracks and always obey crossing signals.
  • When approaching a crossing in a vehicle, look both ways along the track for an oncoming train and be prepared to stop if required.
  • When the warning lights are activated and a train is approaching, do not stop in the middle of the tracks under any circumstance—stop at least 5 metres from the nearest rail and proceed across the tracks only when the lights have stopped flashing and the tracks are clear.

Yellow Emergency Strip

The yellow strip is for emergencies ONLY—for when a customer is in distress, needs medical attention, witnesses vandalism, disputes, sees a suspicious package, or requires Police and Transit Safety intervention.

The following are NOT emergencies. Do not press the Yellow Emergency Strip when:

  • You missed your stop
  • You discovered you were going in the wrong direction
  • You boarded the wrong train
  • Requesting a stop
  • Need directions
  • Need to buy fare
