Community Profile: Garrison Community Garden
Periodically, we will showcase some of our neighbours along the Georgetown
South Project rail corridor. In this issue, we profile the Garrison Community
Garden near the Strachan Avenue Overpass construction.
The Garrison Community Garden is a grassroots community garden project
located at 805 Wellington Street West. “Part of the Toronto Community Garden
Network, we offer local residents a gardening experience and a connection with
nature in the very urban setting of King and Strachan,” explains Johnny Chiang,
Garden Coordinator.
The garden started in 1997, and currently has about 30 members. Johnny Chiang
became actively involved even before the garden developed. Located on City
property bordering the rail corridor, the garden is a welcome green space for
many condo dwellers in the area. Throughout the April to November season,
gardeners use individual and communal plots, for growing organically (e.g.
pesticide-free) food, flowers and native plants.
To join the Garrison Community Garden, members must live within the catchment
area (e.g. the area bounded by Dundas Street, Dufferin Street, Bathurst Street
and Lake Ontario). For a small membership fee, members can attend monthly
gatherings, get their own plot and a key to access the garden. If you are
