West Toronto Diamond Grade Separation

The West Toronto Diamond (WTD) is rail-to-rail and rail-to-road grade separation in the Georgetown South Corridor. When it is complete, the GO commuter line will run underneath the CP freight line and provide safer, more efficient scheduling for all current and future GO service in the corridor.

Updates

  • May 11 – Sunday work, temporary change in hours. What we are doing: We continue to clean out the interlocking pipe-piles and fill them with concrete and sealing materials to finish the water-tight wall of the lowered corridor. Much of this work is being done during the week; however, some of it must be done over the weekends when fewer trains are operating. We do not expect an increase in noise or vibration; the standard augering equipment we use during the week will be used on Sundays. Sunday work hours are 7:30 a.m. – 5:00p.m. until early June
  • April 30 – We continue to make progress installing rebar and pouring concrete in over 2,000 piles in preparation for the final pouring of a permanent concrete cap. This work will continue into the summer as we prepare to start excavating the rail corridor to lower it between Dupont Street and St. Clair Avenue West. We will excavate the lowered corridor in stages so there are no disruptions to freight or commuter rail service in the corridor. The Junction Road/Old Weston Road rail crossing remains closed and will be reopened as soon as possible.

Project Schedule

  • Grade Separation Contract: mobilization in progress
  • Pipe Pile Validation Contract: in progress until early 2012
  • Project complete: 2014

What we are doing

Grascan Construction Ltd. was awarded the Grade Separation Contract, which is the last phase of construction, and began mobilizing onsite in mid-October. This last phase will be complete in 2014 and includes:

  • Excavation of the corridor from Dupont Street to St. Clair Avenue
  • Building walls and the base of the lowered corridor
  • Installation of two slide-in bridges; one bridge to separate train and vehicle traffic at the Old Weston Road and Junction Road crossing and another bridge to separate GO Transit trains from freight trains at the CP track crossing
  • Track realignment and testing
  • Please note, the Pipe Pile Validation Contract will continue until early 2012 including pile replacement work and installation of shoring walls

How this will affect you

  • Nearby residents may continue to hear the crane mounted augers, which look and operate like very large drill bits, as they remove soil from within the pipe piles
  • Some noise and vibration can be expected when pipe piles are removed and when shoring walls are installed
  • Soil and dust control measures are in place to protect nearby properties and streets

We thank our neighbours for their continued patience as we complete this work as quickly and as safely as possible. Please review our presentation to learn about the benefits of these grade separations and the innovative slide-in bridge design.

Noise and Vibration

Noise and vibration monitors have been set up along the West Toronto Diamond project area to monitor any noise and vibration generated by the construction. This data will be posted on a weekly basis.

The following graph displays 1-hour averaged noise levels measured in decibels (dbA).

Vibration

No elevated vibration levels were recorded during this construction period.
