Information about the fare increase

At its meeting on December 5, 2012, the Metrolinx Board of Directors approved a GO Transit fare increase which will take effect on February 1, 2013. The fare increase will help us continue to provide a high level of customer service across our system while we make improvements such as more parking and more train and bus trips to meet increasing demand, ensure our facilities and equipment are well-maintained, and manage increasing costs.

As GO fares vary by distance travelled, the cost per single adult ride when using a paper ticket will increase incrementally as shown below to ensure the increase is equitable for customers across our system:

  1. 35 cent increase on current fares between $4.50 and $5.80;
  2. 45 cent increase on current fares between $5.81 and $7.35; and
  3. 55 cent increase on current fares greater than $7.35.

*Fares for children, students, seniors and groups will also increase.

The increase will be less for the majority of our customers who use PRESTO as there will be changes to loyalty discounts as follows:

For adults:

  • For rides 1 – 35, the loyalty discount will increase from the current 7.5% to 8.75% off the adult single-ride paper ticket fare.
  • For rides 36 – 40, the loyalty discount will increase from the current 87.5% to 87.75% off the adult single-ride paper ticket fare.

For students:

  • For rides 1-30, the loyalty discount will increase from the current 15% to 16.25% off the adult single-ride paper ticket fare.

For children and seniors:

  • The loyalty discount will increase from the current 50% to 50.75% off the adult single-ride paper ticket fare.
