Signal Modernization
The Union Station Rail Corridor renewal program will allow us to get
ready for a doubling of train traffic over the next 20 to 30 years.
This will be achieved through signal system renewal, computer-based
train dispatching, consolidating dispatch offices, providing new
routings to the Union Station platforms, eliminating track bottlenecks,
increasing train speeds, improving platform access, and adding new snow
clearing devices at rail switches.
Signals are the stoplights and traffic police of the train network. A
modernized system will improve reliability and allow trains to move
faster, while maintaining GO's high safety standards.
The vintage signaling system around Union Station continues to
operate safely, but is difficult to maintain and does not have the
flexibility needed for the demands of today's commuter operation. The
limitations of the system are being felt more and more as train volumes
increase; this is particularly true when there are delays or bad
weather.
The new signal system will allow for faster recovery from train
delays or equipment problems and will be designed for increased train
speeds. It will also streamline and consolidate operations into one
control centre. When combined with GO Transit's security and bus
operations control centres, the signal centre will provide better, more
cost-effective service.
This project also includes work on the cable network, retaining
walls, maintenance access roads that run parallel to the tracks, and the
gas lines that supply heat for snow blowers on rail switches.
