Art In Transit: Luminato on the GO

Art in Transit

Do you need a little extra incentive to get out of bed for work this month? Produced in partnership with GO Transit, the Luminato 2022 Festival includes a unique event that brings live art to your morning commute!

Yes, you’ll still be riding your usual GO train on your way to work, but you’ll feel like you’re attending a street performance. Art in Transit: Luminato on the GO brings the art festival to you and will transform your normal sleepy commute into an immersive performance experience!

One of the performers, Anand Rajaram, says that Art in Transit: Luminato on the GO is meant to be “a moment of whimsy and lightness for and amongst morning commuters…[and] it will replace any dreariness of that morning commute with bliss, being inside the performance without any stress or responsibility to do more than just watch and enjoy.” He hopes that “this interaction will stay with [viewers] for the whole day or many days, returning when the world of work proves less than inspiring…”
Now that’s an amazing way to start your day!

Details On The Experience

What’s Art in Transit: Luminato on the GO all about? It’s a series of 7 free performances over 7 days, on various GO train lines, giving you a theatrical experience during your regular morning ride. Stations and train cars will become the “stage” for this immersive performance that concludes with a special event at Union Station. This is the first time that GO Transit has collaborated with Luminato - and we couldn’t be more excited to share this experience with you!

What’s The Story?

From the Art in Transit: Luminato on the GO organizers, here’s a little taste of what you’ll see during the performance:

“A fish walks onto a GO Train…

Art in Transit: Luminato on the GO follows grumpy, urban Fish, suited and caffeinated, as he begins his morning commute yearning for the water and feeling the call of the lake. With assistance from a cheery Train Conductor and chance encounters with musicians and dancers, rituals and readings, Fish rides the train all the way home to Lake Ontario, while slowly transforming from a fish-in-a-suit into his true aquatic self.  Waiting for Fish at Union Station is the musical Welcoming Committee, who joyfully joins him on his final quest to get to the water.”

Performance Schedule

Check out the performance schedule so you’ll know where to be and what time to catch the train on your GO line.

  • At the first station on the schedule, some artists, musicians, and crew will board Car 6 of the train.
  • At the second station on the schedule, The Fish will be waiting for the train and will board the last car.
  • At the third station on the schedule, dancers will perform inside the station and then board Car 5 of the train along with other artists.
  • When the train arrives at Union Station, a special concluding story event will occur!

About Luminato

Started in 2007, as a way to revitalize Toronto after the SARS epidemic, Luminato embraces art in all its forms and believes in “using art to open people’s hearts and minds to new ideas.” Luminato allows Canadian audiences access to international artists while also “shining a spotlight” on Toronto’s rich art scene. After two years of online events due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Luminato 2022 returns in-person to the parks and theatres of Toronto - and for the first time on GO Transit, too!
