Nov. 2 - 4: Etobicoke Creek bridge replacement work

We have been cheering alongside you throughout the Blue Jays World Series run. To make travel more convenient during those games, we postponed critical work at the Etobicoke Creek bridge that was originally scheduled on Nov. 1 and 2.

This work needed to be rescheduled as soon as possible following completion of the World Series, to continue the full replacement of the bridge over Etobicoke Creek. Disrupting service on Lakeshore West, between Nov. 2 and 4, was essential to making sure that GO service remains safe and dependable for customers.

The bridge over Etobicoke Creek, just west of Long Branch GO station, is more than 100-years-old and work has been underway for months to upgrade it. Between Nov. 2 and 4, we had to shut down a portion of the tracks on Lakeshore West to install the massive crane that will lift the new bridge into place in Dec. 2025. Crews needed to complete the crane installation work as soon as possible, so that the remaining scheduled work can proceed as planned and in time for upcoming track closures.

Over the next month, assembly of the crane will continue at the Etobicoke Creek crossing followed by extensive testing and commissioning when it is fully assembled later this month. The goal is to replace the more than 100-year-old bridge structures this winter. While we know that GO train disruptions are inconvenient, these closures are crucial to maintaining a safe, reliable transit network that will serve our community today and for generations to come.

Crews have installed foundations and temporary towers next to the bridge to support the crane’s structure. Once the crane is assembled, tested and fully commissioned, it will lift the bridge spans into place to replace the current bridges.

Planned Line Construction

Metrolinx is making improvements today to bring you faster, more frequent service in the future. Today, the Lakeshore West line delivers two-way, all-day service seven days a week, from Union Station to Aldershot GO, and hourly service to West Harbour GO. It delivers rush-hour service from Hamilton to Toronto in the morning and back again in the afternoon. We know this line can do even more. We know it can be faster, with more trips all day long.

Whether you are traveling to work or visiting friends and family – Metrolinx is committed to getting you there better, faster, easier. The Lakeshore West GO Expansion will expand your possibilities. With 15-minute service or better throughout the day between Toronto and Burlington, alongside new hourly service to and from Hamilton seven days a week, you’ll have more ways to get where you need to go.

To keep these plans on track, we sometimes work overnight and on weekends, building and updating rail infrastructure, renovating GO stations, building new train platforms and more. Learn more about GO Expansion.

We aim to provide you with plenty of notice when we need to adjust service for construction activity. Please plan your trip in advance.

Work may be adjusted, rescheduled, or extended due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.
